No Way to Break the News: Poetry by Christopher Edelen

I’m afraid to buy things for the house.

Because if this ends

I’ll be moving out.

Nowhere to put things, like a dish drainer.

and when she realizes that I could be anybody

I’m afraid that she’ll come home and say…

“oh a dish drainer.”

and think…

I hate when he buys things for the house.

Because I’m sure he’ll be moving out soon.

And she’s more clever than I am and she thinks:

but a dish drainer is no way to break the news.
