ROCK N’ ROLL CAMP FOR GIRLS LOS ANGELES
Showcase Performance at The Troubadour July 31

(Los Angeles, CA) — Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles is hosting its first-ever Camper Showcase at legendary rock club The Troubadour, on July 31, 2-5 p.m. The Troubadour is located at 9081 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angles 90069. This event is all-ages and open to the public. Tickets are $10. Ticket information will be made available at www.rockcampforgirlsla.org.

At The Showcase, each of the all-girl bands formed at Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls Summer Camp 2010 will take the stage at The Troubadour to perform their original song for the very first time in front of a live audience. At Summer Camp, and under the guidance of volunteer female mentors, girls ages 8-17 have one week to prepare for this goal – not an easy task for anyone! The Showcase is the culminating event following a week of intense music instruction, songwriting and band-bonding, and participation in workshops such as screen-printing, self-defense and DIY art. Throughout the week, the girls are encouraged to express themselves, develop self-confidence and learn to work as a team.

Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles is a non-profit, volunteer-run music education organization dedicated to empowering girls, promoting self-expression and building self-confidence. 2010 is the organization’s first year of operation, and Summer Camp is its very first program, serving 50 girls mostly from the L.A. area and representing a wide range of economic and cultural backgrounds. Financial aid and scholarship programs allow many girls to participate who would not have had the means otherwise.

Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles is inspired by Portland, Oregon’s Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls, which started in 2001 and has influenced the birth of over 20 camps in the U.S., Canada and Europe. These camps, including Los Angeles’, are united by membership in the Girls Rock Camp Alliance. Looking to the future, Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles hopes to expand Summer Camp, develop an after school program for girls, and introduce music workshops for adult women. Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles is a project of Community Partners, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Silver Lake Jubilee
“SILVER LAKE HOSTS A NEW FESTIVAL THAT IS ALL ABOUT MUSIC, ART AND BEING ECO-FRIENDLY”
Silver Lake is known for its deep-rooted indie rock culture, its eclectic bars and nightlife and generally hip and laid-back lifestyle. What is less known is how Silver Lake, East Hollywood, Echo Park, Los Felize and surrounding communities are transforming Los Angeles into a music, arts, culture and food destination. These neighborhoods are home to some of LA’s best restaurants, trend-defining music acts, accomplished writers, artists, gallerists and perform-ers. Silver Lake Jubilee aims to bring together all the eclectic and vibrant cultural enclaves of these neighborhoods into a two-day music and arts street festival, held May 22 and 23, 2010.

Festival-goers can expect over 20 musical acts (both local and national), comedy, theatre per-formances, poetry readings and live performances by LA-based groups. For foodies there will be over 40 food vendors highlighting the best of Silver Lake/Los Angeles cuisine. For those looking for something unique, there will be over 60 merchandise vendors selling hand-crafted, unique and locally-sourced goods. The festival also includes an interactive children’s village, arts vil-lage, literary village and eco village.

For lineup and detailed event information, visit the official festival website at: www.silverlakejubilee.com

SLJ’s Green Commitment: With the help of Sustain LA, Silver Lake Jubilee is implementing Zero Waste initiatives with the goal of 90% landfill diversion and aims to source power from al-ternative energy sources. The festival will not utilize Styrofoam, single‐use plastic bags or plastic water bottles. We encourage attendees to bring their own cups, reusable bags and a blank t-shirt to get a special Silver Lake Jubilee screen-printed T-shirt during the festival. A free bike valet will be available and the festival encourages Metro ridership.

About the event organizer: The Silver Lake Jubilee is organized by the Los Angeles Arts and Athletics Alliance (LAAAA), a community-based non-profit. Funds from the festival are used to further the mission of LAAAA: To support local arts and athletics programs, community organi-zations and other non-profits in the communities that LAAAA serves.

IN THE PRESENCE OF PAUL CAPONIGRO
April 10 thru June 10, 2010

“When photographing, I do not necessarily visualize complete or completed images before returning to my darkroom to print. Rather, it’s my intention to sense an emotional shape, to grasp some vague visitation, and to carry these shades along with me into that dimly lit space of hope and discovery.” — Paul Caponigro

Peter Fetterman Gallery in Santa Monica celebrates the exquisite landscape and still life photographs of one of the last American masters of photography in this beautiful exhibition.

A kindred spirit of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Minor White and other Bay Area photographers who he befriended while living in San Francisco in the mid-fifties, Paul Caponigro was seeking something more intimate and elemental in work. This approach produced images that were not only iconic but also some of the finest prints ever created in photography.

Today, at home in rural Maine, the 77-year-old Paul Caponigro takes hours upon hours to delicately print each image. A lifelong student of the piano, music has been a great influence on the way he both views potential subjects and meticulously prints them. Each photograph is created with the care and sensitivity that one would use to create an inspired piece of music. Please join us in celebrating the artistic genius of Paul Caponigro.

Peter Fetterman Gallery is located at 2525 Michigan Avenue #A7, Santa Monica, CA 90404.
Phone (310) 453-6463 or info@peterfetterman.com.
Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 6 pm.

Address: 5820 Wilshire Blvd. Ste.100, Los Angeles, CA 90036
When: Artists’ Reception: Wednesday, April 7th , 6 – 9pm
Website: www.lawrenceasher.com

Lawrence Asher Gallery examines structure through the eyes and compositions of three distinctive painters. Paul Davies balances exquisite modern architecture in abstracted, painterly environs utilizing contemporary art-making techniques. Christina Shurts’ loose and free application of paint reduces concerns with engineering principles of her super-structures. Dream states and imperfect memories serve as the catalyst of her creations. Andre Yi continues his masterly renderings of landscape and structure from a more focused, natural perspective. These paintings, inspired by his own photographs of National forests and parks, effectively examine man’s complex relationship with the natural world.

ARENA 1 is pleased to announce the opening of FOUND, an exhibition by six Los Angeles based mixed-media/collage artists, curated by Sandra Vista. The exhibition, which opens in conjunction with the 4th annual Airport Art Walk, celebrates the creativity that can occur in the act of recycling. As part of the concept for this exhibition, participating artists were invited to make field trips to salvage yards throughout Los Angeles county as a way of expanding on the possibilities for finding material to integrate with their own respective styles.

The effort provided a bonus to all the artists, who, learning about each others techniques and practices were able to identify materials for each other as they searched these vast acres of salvage yards

NIGHT LIGHTS
EXHIBITON FEATURING HELEN K. GARBER, GINNY MANGRUM, AND BILL SOSIN
DNJ Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition, Night Lights, featuring photographic works by Helen K. Garber, Ginny Mangrum, and Bill Sosin. This exhibition brings together three artists who produce their art in the city streets– under the cover of darkness. Their works capture beautiful nightscapes, alternating between eerie landscapes, and magical color-filled abstract compositions of light and dark. Photographing at night poses special challenges, and these three contemporary photographers respond in a fascinating way.

Helen K. Garber is known for her night urban landscapes taken in cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Paris and Venice, Italy. For “Night Lights,” Garber will exhibit new work from her “Venice/ Venezia” series of diptychs that juxtapose images of Venice, Italy and Venice Beach, CA. Her portrayal of the darkened cities creates a descriptive, yet poetic model of the human environment. Using painterly techniques, she presents her photographs on canvas, to show the sparkle and texture of the tones. Garber’s images are exhibited internationally and are in permanent collections of museums, private and corporate collections nationwide.

In her second exhibit at DNJ Gallery, Ginny Mangrum will exhibit new work from her ongoing series, “Night Moves.” In these photographs, Mangrum emphasizes the intensity of darkness as one travels throughout the night. All the places she photographs are actively used during the day, but at night, become as still as the image itself. She explores interior and exterior spaces, presence and absence of the human subject, and the tension that is created by her voyeuristic observation. Mangrum received her MFA from Mills College in Oakland, CA and is currently an Adjunct Professor at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, CA. She has exhibited her photography throughout California since 2003.

Bill Sosin’s contribution to “Night Lights” consists of richly colored photographs capturing urban landscapes in the rain. Sosin’s “City Rain” photographs describe the texture, shape, weight, and direction of raindrops at night as well as the twinkling luminescence of the streetlights, fluorescent lights, and storefronts behind the rain. Sosin’s images are a collection of transient moments that are captured in passing. His work has been exhibited widely throughout the Unites States and he has won many awards for his work, including the International Lucie Award ‘Official Selection’ in 2009 and the International Color Award from the Photography Masters Cup, among others.

Soundtrack of Your Life Group Show
Featuring paintings and other works by a diverse mix of artists, “Soundtrack of Your Life” will explore the ways in which we remember the turning points of our lives, particularly as they relate to our favorite movies and even their soundtracks.

“The exhibition is about the cinematic patina of our memories,” said Sam Saghatelian, curator of “Soundtrack of Your Life” and a participating artist.

“The show also sheds light on the interrelationship between our most significant experiences and the films we might associate them with,” Saghatelian continued. “In this sense, experiential images and sounds ingrained in our imaginations are complemented and amplified by certain motion pictures, including their music, therefore deepening the vividness of memory and helping shape our personal and cultural identities.”

In keeping with the cinematic theme of “Soundtrack of Your Life,” the exhibition will be held among an installation of moviemaking paraphernalia and artifacts such as vintage film reels and canisters. The installation will be designed by Harry Momdjian and Saghatelian. “Throughout the exhibition, the gallery will be reminiscent of a cutting room,” Saghatelian said.

Artists participating in the exhibition include Paul Chatem, Renee Lawter, Brooks Salzwedel, Greg Noppe, Saratoga Sake, Anthony Ausgang, Jane Gotts, Jason Hernandez, Ken Garduno, Aaron White, Ben Kehoe, Tom Haubrick.

“Everything But the Kitschen Sync”
La Luz De Jesus Gallery proudly presents its 13th annual juried group show, “Everything But the Kitschen Sync”. This grandiose exhibition features work from what the gallery feels are some of the today’s most relevant artists. Commercial illustrators, tattooists, scenic painters, students, and animators have been invited to submit work of a more personal nature. The show includes artists previously exhibited at La Luz de Jesus and also features a large selection of work from a brand new batch of undiscovered talent culled from months of submissions to the gallery. “Everything But The Kitschen Sync” is a wonderful forum for the gallery and its fans to check out new and upcoming art trends and get the first glimpse of tomorrow’s stars. Matthew Flaming discusses and signs The Kingdom of Ohio
It’s a story about conspiracies and struggles to reshape the world; about secret wars between men like J. P. Morgan, Thomas Edison, and Nikola Tesla. It is about one of the strangest and least-known mysteries of American history: the existence and disappearance of the Lost Kingdom of Ohio. It is about science and faith, and the distance between the two.

Most of all, it’s a story about a man and a woman, and about love.

Offramp Gallery is pleased to present Still Perplexed, a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Myron Kaufman, from February 21 – March 21, 2010.

Witty narrative, a preternaturally bright palette and an intuitive sense of composition are the hallmarks of Myron’s work. Nothing is sacred as he tackles subjects as far ranging as Wall Street, religion, Dick Cheney, Little Orphan Annie, aging, nudity, and sexuality. Drawn initially to the bright colors and free-flowing creativity of these paintings, one’s attention is ultimately held by the narrative. Simultaneously evoking humor, emotional discomfort, and a desire to know more, one feels privileged to peek into the wonderfully strange psyche of Myron Kaufman.

A full color catalog accompanies the exhibition.

Elaine Carhartt: Ceramic Sculpture

Yuri Elvin Paintings
Born to artists Ana Victorson and Steve Elvin, Yuri has always painted. He quit all art to pursue his academics and a career in film and television. Receiving an mfa and working for 10 years in the film industry, he picked-up where he left off 15 years earlier, again as a creator. Since then he has received international acclaim, illustrated for books and magazines, provided art for film and television on such shows as EASTWICK, 1000 WAYS TO DIE, and the FOOD NETWORK. He also has many accomplished collectors ranging from studio executives to writers to lawyers and leaders of environmental activism.

This show brings together the best of two years of work. With no formal art education, discovering acrylic paint without guidance has brought out some very inspiring techniques and personal revelations. His long time love of drawing has kept his pencil close, and his materials few.

The art work spans several genres: beginning with patterns and abstract spiritual insights, to sci-fi fantasy. Being inspired by the discovery of his own stylized self-developing characters, cultures, customs, and politics, has given way to the creation of its own ‘world’. Illustration-assignments, commissions, and aimless research often force the learning of new subject matter and inspires the expansion of the ‘world’ that his characters live.

Mad Mondays Shadowscene Party with Forth Featured Artist Ellei Johndro

Time: 10PM-2AM
Location: The Standard Hotel, 8300 Sunset Boulevard

Party it up with Forth magazine and our latest issue’s featured artist Ellei Johndro of Shadowscene this Monday June 29th!!

madmonforth

“Yes, I’m here for Ellei Johndro’s gallery? Fragments & Figmentations?” Ah, yes. The photographer known in some circles as Shadowscene. Ellei: the young, underground Annie Leibovitz. I’ve volunteered to immerse myself in her world, to do jumping-jacks on her brain. Not just because she is talented and plugged into the throbbing pulse of LA’s neon nightlife, but because we are at the razor’s edge of the second decade of this new, tormented century – and if anyone in this town can put my generation in perspective, it may be Ellei. Tracking her down and viewing this corner of the world through her lens will surely yield some answers… But where the hell is she?
