No Way to Break the News: Poetry by Christopher Edelen

“Target”

/

I’m afraid to buy things for the house.

Because if this ends

I’ll be moving out.

Nowhere to put things, like a dish drainer.

and when she realizes that I could be anybody

I’m afraid that she’ll come home and say…

“oh a dish drainer.”

and think…

I hate when he buys things for the house.

Because I’m sure he’ll be moving out soon.

And she’s more clever than I am and she thinks:

but a dish drainer is no way to break the news.

Christopher Edelen is an author and poet. He grew up the oldest of three children, splitting his time between Rochester, NY and Louisville, KY. He is currently living in Los Angeles with his dog, and working on his webcomic “anotherno(te) comics.”
