“Inside all of us is a Wild Thing….”
-Maurice Sendak
On the cold and rainy evening of December 11, Thinkspace Gallery hosted artist Andy Kehoe’s first ever solo exhibition – The World Unseen and Those In Between. Wood panel canvases and globs of autumnal colors wallpapered the space for gallery goers to get lost in. However, the real intrigue behind the simplistic nature based landscapes lay in the delicate execution of emotion that Mr. Kehoe translated throughout his works.
Kehoe, a native of Pittsburg, PA and a self proclaimed man of solitude draws on his own experiences as he lets the common voyeur peek into his world through the lens of this exhibit. Sorting through the work I was reminded of the popular children’s book, Where the Wild Things Are as the nature themed pictures of wooly animals dressed the canvas panels. Kehoe’s paintings also incorporated quite uniquely, an otherworldly white figure that made a more than occasional cameo amongst his characters. He remarked that the figure symbolized the loneliness in the so called “world unseen and in between.” And while I’ve only mentioned all the sweet and somber melodrama what I’ve yet to state is that though the subjects appear lonely, Kehoe’s touch of color and style most importantly depict a whimsical and captivating landscape quirky animals, boats and trees. Loneliness doesn’t have to be so drab after all.
