My sculptures function both as abstracted bodies contained in a tiny self-centered orbit, as well as invasive environmental forces which create a tension between themselves and the viewer. I am fascinated by the rich relationships and dialogues that form within the individual, the ever-shifting conflict between nature and will, impulse and altruism, toil toward ascension and simply existing with oneself. I love the micro-epic, and hope to engage the viewer’s exaggerated and melodramatic perception of an environment’s antagonistic relationship to themselves, a crystallized vision of delusions of grandeur.
Liz Maher uses a variety of low-tech means to explore the ever shifting relationships between constructed reality and perceived environment. Her sense of both patience and of physical abundance is informed by her day job as the baker and chocolatier at San Francisco's only X-rated cake shop. She spends most of her free time gathering found materials into a bike basket and engaging in a slew of collaborative projects. Maher received her BFA in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design in 2004, and now lives in San Francisco.
